There are several ways to gauge the amount of light your orchid is receiving. To evaluate if your orchid is in the right spot, check the light level on a sunny day. Here are two effective methods for assessing light exposure:
The simplest way to measure light is to observe the shadows cast on your orchid’s leaves. Hold your hand about 30 cm (12 inches) from the orchid’s leaves and try to create a shadow on them. Ideally, you should only see a faint and evenly distributed shadow on the leaves. If you see a distinct dark shadow, it indicates strong lighting conditions and too much light for your Phalaenopsis orchid. In this case, consider moving your orchid to a better location.
Alternatively, you can use a Lux light intensity meter, which provides an accurate measurement of the light your orchid is receiving. If you have multiple plants or find orchid care challenging, this device can make the process more manageable.
Phalaenopsis Orchid Light Requirements
Light is measured in Lux, a scientific unit representing the intensity of light falling on a surface, measured in lumens per square meter. Ideally, Phalaenopsis orchids should receive around 10,700 to 16,000 lux for a minimum of 8 hours daily. This moderate light intensity is essential for their growth.
These orchids can tolerate significantly lower light conditions for an extended period, but it will slow down their development. Excessively high and prolonged light exposure can lead to leaf damage, potentially causing burning. Phalaenopsis orchids are ideally suited for indoor environments, where light conditions are typically much lower than outdoors. When cultivating them outdoors, using a 50% shade cloth is advisable.

If you truly want to keep your orchid near a south-facing window, consider using sheer curtains to reduce direct sunlight exposure. Alternatively, place a shade barrier in front of your orchid to shield it from direct sunlight.
